HARTFORD CITY, IN-
Ruth L. Flatter-Oswalt, 88, of Hartford City, passed away at 10:37 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 7, 2017 at IU Health Blackford Community Hospital in Hartford City.
A native and life resident of this community, Ruth was born on election day, November 6, 1928 in Licking Township, Blackford County, one of four children to Edgar and Ethel (Woodring) Wilson.
Ruth as a child, grew up attending Mt. Carmel U.M. Church, graduated from Hartford City High School, class of 1945, received her Associates degree from Ball State University and completed courses in Chicago in the American Management academy.
On June 18, 1949 She married Richard "Dick" Flatter at the Mt. Carmel U.M. Church. She and her husband both were long-time members of the Eaton U.M. Church, where both had taught Sunday school for several years. They celebrated fifty-one and a half years of marriage, prior to his passing on December 19, 2000.
Ruth had also attended Amber's Beauty School in Muncie, had worked for the telephone company years ago, as well as David and Nancy Troyer at "Nancy's Shoppe" as a window dresser, but especially was a farm wife.
Ruth was a corporate secretary/administrative assistant for Production Credit Association of Hartford City, serving as a corporate secretary covering ten counties.
On January 17, 2004 she married her second husband, Robert Jay Oswalt in Hartford City and they celebrated over eleven years of marriage, prior to his passing June 1, 2015.
Ruth had a passion for collecting decorative glass chickens, was a member of the form Order of Eastern Star, Purity chapter 126 in Hartford City and was a long-time member of Psi Iota Xi sorority in Hartford City, operating the sorority's Thrift Store several years.
Surviving family includes her step-children: Pam Balle (Michael), Jon Douglas Oswalt (Ann) and Robert Oswalt II (Angie). One sister, Helen Twibell; Step-Grandchildren: Chris & Michael Balle, Courtney Oswalt, Robert J. Oswalt II and Emily & Elizabeth Oswalt. 5 Step-great grandchildren also survive. Also close friends and neighbors, Rita & Alan Bell, Rod Smoot, Jeff Smoot and Mike and Fran Eikenbary, as well as several nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her parents, two husbands, a sister Virginia Langdon and a brother that died in infancy.
Services will be at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, September 12th, in the Waters Funeral Home, 501 W. Washington St., Hartford City, with Brian C. Waters presiding. Entombment will follow services at Gardens of Memory, Muncie.
Visitation for family and friends will be from 4 - 8 p.m. Monday, September 11, 2017 and one hour prior to services Tuesday at the funeral home.
Memorials may be directed to the Blackford Community Foundation 121 N. High St., Hartford City, Indiana 47348 for a scholarship to be established in her & Richard's name. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
