Portia Juanita (Michael) Lucas Schuppener

Portia Juanita Lucas Schuppener, 93, passed away early Sunday morning, April 16, 2023 at her home.
She was born on March 3, 1930, the fourth of six children, of the late Freedith G. and Thelma L. (Waters) Michael in Blackford County. She graduated from Hartford City High School, class of 1947. On May 2, 1948 she married Ira Lucas, in Hartford City. They celebrated forty-nine years of marriage, prior to his passing, June 16, 1997.
Juanita, as she was affectionately known, while living in Hartford City, was a long-time and faithful member of the Bethel Center Church of the Brethren, where she was the church pianist most of her life. She also served as Deaconess at the church and had also served as Vice President, of the South Eastern District of the Church of the Brethren and had also served as Treasurer of the Women’s Fellowship of the church.
Additionally, she belonged to the Warner Gear Sympathy Club, played drums & piano for the Montpelier Dinner Bell Band and served as President for eight years for the North East District Clerical Association.
Juanita retired from the Blackford County Department of Family Services in 1997, after twenty-five years of service. In November of 1998, she moved to Coconut Creek, Florida, to be closer to her family. There, she met Dale Schuppener and they were married Dec. 17, 2000. His death occurred May 8, 2006.
She leaves behind two daughters: Patricia “Pat” Rogers, of Margate, Florida and Myrna Lucas of Phoenix, Arizona. Seven grandchildren: Terry (Paulette) Terhune, Dallas Terhune, Brandee (Dean) Graziano, Shaniece (Travis) Congress, Stephanie Logan, Jamie (Brian Kennedy) Logan and Mychal Tyrone Lucas; nine great-grandchildren: Danny Graziano, Olivia Graziano, Ashlyn Terhune, Alexandria Terhune, Dallas Dale Terhune, Tyler Lesser, Alex Lesser, Nevaeh Robertson and Kylee Graziano. One brother, Jerry (Diana) Michael of Portland, IN; one sister, Nancy Binegar of Fairmount and many loving nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
In addition to her parents and both husbands, she also is preceded into eternal rest by her brother, Charles Michael, two sisters; Marcelline Levert and M. Maxine Slentz; and two sons-in-law: Peter Rogers and Michael Love.
Services celebrating her life will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, April 29, 2023, in the Waters Funeral Home, 501 W. Washington St., Hartford City, with Richard Reasoner presiding. Burial follows at the Gardens of Memory Cemetery, North of Muncie.
Visitation for friends and family will be from 2:00 – 6:00 p.m. Friday, Apr. 28th and from 10:00 – 11:00 a.m. Saturday, at the funeral home.
