Nedra Lips

HARTFORD CITY, IN—

Nedra J. (Townsend) Lips, 89, passed at 1:10 A.M. Sunday, March 14, 2021 in University Nursing Center, Upland.

Born May 14, 1931 in Hartford City, she was the sixth of ten children born to Adam Carl and Nellie B. (Casterline) Townsend and was a 1949 graduate of Hartford City High School.

On August 4, 1952 she married William E. Lips, Sr. in Marion, Indiana.  They celebrated over fifty-five years of marriage prior to his passing.

Nedra was a faithful member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Hartford City and enjoyed playing golf.

She is survived by her son William (Sandy) Lips of Montpelier; three grandchildren:  Adam Lips, Monica Ritter and Justin Lips; five great-grandchildren:  Luke Lips, Darrin Hodges, David Hodges, Alicia Ritter and Grayson Tucker; two great-great-grandchildren:  Camden Lips and Nova Lips; one brother, John Townsend of Braintree, MA; one sister, Nellie Mae Schaffer of Fort Wayne, as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins.

She is preceded in death by her father, March 15, 1968; her mother, on May 24, 1987; her husband on Feb. 9, 2008; her son: Robert “Robbie” Lips; three brothers:  Carl Townsend, Marion Townsend, Kermit Townsend and four sisters:  Helen Rogers, Vivian Bauer, Julia Bates and June Holcombe.  She also is preceded in death by a granddaughter, Tara Hodges.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, March 18, 2021 in St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, 209 S. Spring St., Hartford City, with Father Kevin Hurley as celebrant.  Burial will be held privately, following the mass Thursday, at Gardens of Memory, Muncie.

Visitation will be from 9:00 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. Thursday, prior to the mass at Waters Funeral Home 501 W. Washington St., Hartford City.

Memorials may be made in the form of masses to the church.
