Linda Lee Knight-Underwood-Davis
HARTFORD CITY, IN—
Linda was born March 27, 1939, to her Father and Mother: Rufus Jackson Knight and Rachel Loren Mitchell Knight. After a short five-day illness, Linda passed away peacefully surrounded by loving family and friends at her bedside on September 3, 2024 due largely to having lived a wonderful eighty-five plus years.
Being born on a western Oklahoma farmstead during the Dust Bowl Era meant you had to grow up tough and resilient; Linda was both. Linda bore and raised six wonderful children, daughters Peggy Chavez, Patty Ackors, Janice Underwood; and sons Roy Underwood, Thomas Underwood, and Johnny Underwood. Besides raising her children, Linda worked as a grocery store clerk, dishwasher, seamstress, automobile cleaner & detailer, and also as a pharmaceutical delivery truck driver.
Linda loved to host a good party or be part of one. She organized and hosted many New Years Eve parties, Halloween parties, Valentine’s Day parties, and Senior Citizen proms.
Linda loved horses. She was still trail riding in her 81st year, and loved riding horse drawn buggies and carriages. She was an active member and volunteer at the Circle G Saddle Club, The Carriage and Sleigh Association of Northwest Indiana, and the Whips and Wheels of Indiana.
When Linda wasn’t busy as a volunteer at one of her clubs, she helped build and decorate the Common Grounds Coffee house in Hartford City, IN. Common Grounds was her comfortable place where she loved to meet and visit with her friends around her fireplace with a good cup of coffee.
Linda loved to travel. She would like to call them “day trips”. But they were sometimes up to thirty days at a time. Since 2015, Linda had visited parts of 20 different states, more thoroughly exploring nearly every part of Indiana.
Jim Ferguson reflects on Linda’s memory fondly, sharing the following words about Linda and their adventures together: The first time I met Linda, she asked me if I would be her dance partner for the evening on New Years of 2015 at the Senior Citizens Center of Hartford City, IN. Over the next three or four months, she became my best friend, caregiver, neighbor, and soulmate. Linda had the unique gift of meeting strangers and immediately becoming their friend. Her soft blue eyes and that big toothy smile paired with that soft Texas southern drawl made her impossible not to love.
As I look back on the last 9 years that I have grown to know and love Linda, I will count them as some of the most blessed and cherished parts of my life. She was a true gem. She will be sadly missed and always loved by all who ever met her, knew her, or loved her. Sadly, and happily, she now belongs to the ages, to care for and genuinely remember her memory. Online
