Fred Hoffman Obituary

Frederick Allen Hoffman, 69, passed away at home, surrounded by family, on Saturday, March 23, 2024, after a courageous battle with cancer.

Fred was born on May 30, 1954 in Madison, Indiana to Herman Sr., and Rozella (Allen) Hoffman. He was a 1972 graduate of Shawe Memorial High School and earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Natural Resources from Ball State University in 1976.

On June 12, 1982, Fred married Sonya Walter in Madsion and together they would raise their three children, Nicholas, Aaron, and Katrina in Hartford City.

Fred worked as a courier for UPS for over 28 years, retiring in 2004. He then worked from 2005 to 2016 for Union Chapel Ministries in Muncie and St. John’s Catholic Church from 2014 to 2024.

He was always active in the community, serving as a member of the Blackford County School Board, founding Blackford Youth Soccer and overseeing its growth over the past 30 years, as well as founding Blackford Trails.

Fred was a long-time member of St. John’s Catholic Church in Hartford City where he was a 4th Degree Knight of Columbus, and also served many years as treasurer for the K of C.

In 2021, Fred was awarded Blackford County’s “Citizen of the Year”.

He is survived by his loving wife of over 41 years, Sonya Hoffman; his children: Nicholas Hoffman (Micah), Aaron Hoffman (Jessica), and Katrina Hoffman (Golden); six grandchildren: Jaiden Golden, Keaton Hoffman, Connor Doster, Bridger Smith, Bode Hoffman, and Brentley Hoffman; Fred’s siblings: Carolyn Stutler (Rick), Herman Hoffman Jr., Mary Truitt, Marilyn Jean Faulkenburg (David), Jim Hoffman (Resa), and Frank Hoffman (Lisa); as well as several nieces, nephews and many friends.

In addition to his parents, Fred was preceded in death by his sister, Rose Marie Roberts.

A Mass of Christian Burial celebrated by Father Kevin Hurley will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, March 28, 2024 at St. John’s Catholic Church 209 S Spring St. Hartford City. Burial will follow at Hartford City Cemetery.

Visitation for family and friends will be held from 3:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 27, 2024 at Waters Funeral Home 501 W Washington St., Hartford City. A Christian Wake will be held at 8:00 p.m. following visitation. Additional visitation will be from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m., Thursday at the church.

Memorials in memory of Fred may be made to Blackford Youth Soccer or to St. John’s Catholic Church c/o Waters Funeral Home.
