Glenn M. Smith, D.D.S.

MONTPELIER, IN—

Dr. Glenn M. Smith, 74, long-time and beloved Montpelier dentist, passed on Tuesday morning, at River Terrace Retirement Community in Bluffton, IN.

Born in Gary Indiana, on March 12, 1947, he was the oldest of three children born to Morgan B. and Virginia (Shephard) Smith, graduating from Merrillville High School in 1965.  He served as the President of the National Honor Society while in high school, served as a delegate to Hoosier Boys State and also was a delegate to the Governor’s Youth Council, while in high school.

He continued his education at Indiana University from 1965-1968, serving as male Vice-President- 1968 at Willkie Residence Hall.  He graduated in 1968 with a Bachelor’s degree in Dentistry, then continued with Indiana University’s School of Dentistry, earning his Doctor of Dental Surgery from I.U. in 1972.

Dr. Smith then arrived in Montpelier, Indiana, where he spent his entire professional career, forty-five years, serving the dental needs of the citizens of Montpelier, Hartford City as the surrounding counties.  He served for twenty-three years on the Board of Trustees for the Indiana Dental Association; was a member of the Pierre Fauchard Academy, the International College of Dentists, the American College of Dentists and also a member of the Council on Dental Education and Dental Practice (IDA)

Locally, Dr. Smith was a long-time member of the Montpelier United Methodist Church, where he served in many capacities there.  He served on the Montpelier City Council for twelve years, three of those years as President of the council. He was a member of the Gideons International and the Kiwanis Club.  Additionally, Dr. Smith was on the board for the Blackford County Economic Development Corporation, the Blackford County Corrections Board and was currently a board member of the Blackford County Board of Health, where his vacancy will be sadly missed amongst its members.

He leaves behind his wife of forty-eight years, Diane R. (Bontrager) Smith.  They were married June 3, 1973 at the Montpelier U.M. Church.  His Son, Erick G. Smith of Fort Wayne; his mother, Virginia Smith of Noblesville; one brother, Bruce R. (wife Judith) Smith of Noblesville; one sister, Lisa C. (husband Ron) Hampton of Crown Point, as well several nieces and nephews.

Services will be held at 3:00 p.m. Saturday, October 9, 2021 in the Waters Funeral Home, 501 W. Washington St., Hartford City, with Pastor Tim Wallace presiding.  Private interment of cremains will be in Brookside Memorial Park in Montpelier.

Those wishing to show their expression of sympathy may donate in Dr. Smith’s memory, to the Montpelier United Methodist Church, the Blackford County Animal Shelter, the Gideons International or the Alzheimer’s Association.
