DONALD L. SUMWALT HARTFORD CITY, IN Donald L. Sumwalt, 84, died Thursday, August 27, 2009 in Ball Memorial Hospital. The son of Harry and Mable (McWilliams) Sumwalt, he was born February 7, 1925 in Randolph County. He was a 1943 graduate of Green Township High School in Randolph County. He served in the US Navy, aboard the aircraft carrier USS Boxer, in the South Pacific during WWII from June 8, 1944 to June 21, 1946. He married Rosalie Murray on April 8, 1951 in Hartford City. Mr. Sumwalt had been a petroleum distributor for National Oil & Gas-Phillips 66 Co. in the Hartford City area for 43 years, retiring July 1, 1994. Don was a member of American Legion Post #159, Hartford City. He was a former baseball player for the Hartford City Merchants, Redkey Merchants, Albany Doodle Sockers, and the Parker Boosters. Don was also an avid fisherman. Surviving are: his wife, Rosalie; 1 son Christopher Sumwalt, Hartford City; 2 daughters, Deborah Delporte, Hartford City and Nancy (Tim) Roth, Fairmount; 3 brothers, Tom (Helen) Sumwalt, CA, Joe (Virginia) Sumwalt, Warren and Max (Betty) Sumwalt, Muncie; 2 sisters, Mildred Coppack, Chicago and Harriett (Harry) Andersen, AZ; 5 grandchildren, Derek and Dustin Delporte, Audrey and Jarred Sumwalt and Taylor Roth; 2 step-grandchildren, Josh and Cassie Roth and 3 step-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, 3 brothers, Edward, Fred and James Sumwalt and a sister, Barbara Sumwalt. Family and friends are invited to a celebration of Don’s life from 2-5 p.m. Saturday, August 29 at the Sumwalt residence, 204 S. West St., Hartford City.
