Betty Atkinson

Betty Ilene (Markin) Atkinson, 88, passed late Saturday afternoon, April 24, 2021, at the T.J. Samson Community Hospital in Glasgow, Kentucky.

Born October 15, 1932 in Blackford County, she was one of nine children born to Henry J. and Edna Esther (Dickson) Markin and was a 1950 graduate of Hartford City High School. 

She took Clarence R. Atkinson as her husband that same year and completed her nursing degree at Ball Memorial Hospital in 1957-58.

Betty worked for Dr. Warren Stibbins of Muncie, Dr. Raymond Beights of Ft. Wayne, Marion General Hospital, retiring to Indianapolis.  She also had spent time in Lagro, Florida prior to moving to Glasgow, Kentucky to be closer to her family.

She leaves behind her loving husband of over seventy-one years, Clarence; her son, Dennis (wife, Lynne) Atkinson; her daughter, Dawn Short; six grandchildren:  Nathanial Atkinson, Mariah Atkinson, Rob Short, and Hannah Danielle (Dalton) Edwards, Jessica (Jason) Bradley, and Michelle (Richard) Anthony; great-grandchildren:  Jzeckha, Blake, Kaiye, Summer, Ivy Rayne, Molly, Tess, Jarrett, Javen & Joshua, as well as thirty-three nieces and nephews.

In additional to her parents, she is preceded in death by all of her siblings: brother, Lloyd Markin; seven sisters:  Fae Crump, Virginia Johnson, Esther Rigel, Helen Birch, Ada Schwarzkopf, Belva Brandon and Ellen Furnish.

Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, April 30, 2021 in the Waters Funeral Home, 501 W. Washington St., Hartford City, with Minister Donald Watts presiding. Burial will follow in the Hartford City Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 12:00 noon until 2:00 p.m. Friday, at the funeral home.
