Allen W. Smith

Allen W. Smith, 79, passed away April 11, 2017 in Florida.

He was born March 2, 1938 in Tipton, Indiana to Leon and Inez (Wiley) Smith.

Allen graduated from Ball State University then received his PhD from Indiana University. He was a professor for 30 years at Eastern Illinois University, Charleston, Illinois. In 1986 Allen wrote a textbook "Understanding Economics", published by Random House, which has been used by more than 600 high schools throughout the nation. After his retirement he moved to Florida.

Surviving family members are: his wife, Barbara Joan Smith, Frostproof, FL; sons, Mark (Jacki) Smith, Hixson, TN and Michael (Dealyne) Smith, Winter Haven, FL; daughter, Lisa (Gary) Murphy, Fairview Heights, IL; grandchildren, Connor Smith, Noah Smith and Garrett Murphy; brothers, Daniel (Dana) Smith, Hartford City, Jack (Caroline) Smith, Naples, FL, Robert Smith, Upland, Gary (Amy) Smith, Hartford City; sisters, Janet Leffingwell, Upland, Ruby (David) Schultz, Kendallville, and Mary (John) Atkinson, Nappannee.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Ronald.

The funeral service will be 10:00 a.m. Monday, April 17, 2017 in Waters Funeral Home, 501 W. Washington St. Hartford City with his daughter, Lisa Murphy presiding and Pastor Vic Stoltzfus assisting. Burial will follow in Gardens of Memory, Muncie.

Visitation will be from 9:00 to 10:00 a.m. Monday, April 17 prior to the service.
