Virgil Sutton

May 8, 1939 – Aug. 17, 2021

HARTFORD CITY, IN—

Virgil Sutton, 82, long-time Washington Twp. Resident, passed Tuesday morning, at IUHealth/Ball Memorial Hospital, Muncie.

Born in Van Buren, Indiana, he was one of three children of Clifford A. "Pete" and Mildred M. (Banter) Sutton. He was raised in Hartford City, graduating from Hartford City High School, class of 1959.  He married Mary Jane (Rogers) in Eaton, Indiana on December 5, 1964 and she survives.

Virgil retired after forty years of employment at the 3M Company of Hartford City. After retirement, he also worked for Hartford Automotive.  Virgil may have even mowed your yard for you, as he enjoyed mowing.

An avid gun collector and sharpshooter, he had earned multiple awards, including State recognition. Virgil was a humble man, as he'd given away most of the trophies he'd won.  He was a lifetime member of the NRA, a founding member of the Ditchbank Shooters and was a former member of the Legion, Moose and Deercreek Conservation Club.

He leaves behind his wife of nearly fifty-seven years, Mary; son, Troy (Amy) Sutton; daughter Tammy Ford; one brother, Ron (Susan) Sutton; grandchildren:  Ryan (Kayla) Sutton, Adam Smith (Amanda Phillips), Trace, Trayton and Treavan Sutton and Stacey, Justin & Jimmy; six great-grandchildren; Piper, Liam, Jersey, Brantley, Myan and Roman; along with several nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by a son, Tracy in 1969; sister Glenna Knox in 1994; mother in 1998, father in 2007 and great-grandson, Damon.

Services will be held Saturday, August 21, 2021 at 11:00 A.M. in the Waters Funeral Home, 501 W. Washington St., Hartford City, with Rev. Bobby Thomas presiding.  Burial follows at the Hartford City Cemetery.

Visitation for friends and family will be Friday from 2 – 4 & 6 – 8 P.M.  and an hour prior to services on Saturday, at the funeral home.
