Jack Lee Bates, 84, passed away Saturday, October 14, 2017 in University Nursing Center, Upland.

He was born in Blackford County on July 13, 1933 to Lewis E. and Juanita (Whitacre) Bates and graduated from Hartford City High School in 1951. He married Kathryn "Sue" Horine in Hartford City on June 2, 1956.

Jack served in the Army during the Korean War. He was a former member the American Legion #159 and was a Life Member of the Amvets Post #23.

He worked at St. Joe Paper, 3-M Company and owned and the operated Sunoco station at Kickapoo and Walnut Streets in Hartford City.

Jack was an avid golfer and fisherman and was a devoted uncle to all of his nieces and nephews.

Survivors include his wife, Kathryn "Sue" Bates; nieces and nephews, Kim (Joe) Lloyd, Tamara Kennard, Kipp (Jessica) Horine, Lance Horine, Larry Wright, Lisa (Jack) McDonald, Layne Wright and several great-nieces and great-nephews. Also surviving are two sisters-in-law, Mary Ann (Horine) Jones and Janet Bates. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Bill Bates and a sister, Esther Wright.

A graveside service will be at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, October 18, 2017 in Hillcrest Cemetery, Redkey with Pastor Mitchell Rees officiating. Military Rites will be conducted by the Dunkirk American Legion.
