Fred Richard "Dick" Sutton, 86, passed away peacefully on February 19, 2018 surrounded by his loving family. Formerly of Hartford City, he had resided in Indianapolis for the last two years.
Born on August 15, 1931, to Fred and Mary Sutton, he graduated from Montpelier High School in 1949 as president of his senior class. He joined the U.S. Navy and served on an aircraft carrier in the South Pacific during the Korean Conflict. After leaving the Navy in 1954, he worked as a machinist for General Motors at their Chevrolet plant in Muncie. He also served as an aircraft mechanic in the U.S. Air National Guard at Baer Field in Fort Wayne for many years, serving one year of active duty in Europe in 1961-62 immediately following the construction of the Berlin Wall.
Dick married Elsie Mae DeWitt on July 5, 1952, in Hartford City.
He was a proud and active member of Blackford Lodge #106 F & AM in Hartford City, having served as Master. He was also a member of the American Legion Post 159 and BPO Elks 625. Dick loved spending time with people, especially his family, and enjoyed every moment to its fullest. He was also an avid golfer and loved watching basketball of any kind.
In addition to his wife, Dick is survived by his two children, son Fred Richard (Rick) II and his husband, Bobby Owens, daughter Julie Ponting; grandchildren Laura Burklew (husband Ronnie), Amy Sutton, Jonathan Sutton, Kurt Ponting (wife Amy), and Kara Fisher (husband Michael); great grandchildren Nicholas Parks, Clara Ponting, Caitlin Ponting, Julia Fisher, and Claire Burklew and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 3 at St. Luke's United Methodist Church, 100 W. 86th Street, Indianapolis. Friends may attend the service or may visit the family immediately following the service at St. Luke's.
Graveside service with Military Funeral Honors by the Delaware County Veterans Honor Guard will be at 2 p.m. March 3 at the Gardens of Memory, Muncie. The cortege will leave Waters Funeral Home at 1:45 p.m.
