Hartford City, IN Francis X. Charnley, 57, died unexpectedly Tuesday, April 6 at his residence. The son of Ross and Rita (Pursley) Charnley, he was born July 29, 1952 in Hartford City and graduated from Blackford High School in 1972. He lived most of his life in Hartford City except for a few years in Oklahoma. He married Bonnie Sue Terhune in Hartford City on July 3, 1977. Her death occurred July 22, 2005. Francis worked several years at Vargo's Bakery, Hartford City, and served as lead cook and baker for 16 years at Creative Dining, Taylor University. Mr. Charnley was a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church and the Sons of Amvets Post #23. Surviving are: his mother, Rita; a step-son, Mike Potarf, OK; a step-daughter, Debbie Clayton, OK; five brothers, Rick (Dixie), Nick (Janet), Mark (Robin), Vincent, all of Hartford City, and Geno (Marlena Jo), Angola; three sisters, Mary (Gary) Vandebur, Montpelier, Teresa (John) Rouse, Hartford City and Judy Smith, California and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his father, a sister, Anne Benedict and a step-daughter, Kelli Clayton. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday, April 9 in St. John the Evangelist Church, 209 S. Spring St., Hartford City with Father Dave Newton as celebrant. Friends may call at the Waters Funeral Home, 501 W. Washington St., Hartford City from 6-8 p.m. Thursday, April 8 and from 9-9:30 a.m. on Friday. A Christian Wake Service will be at 6 p.m. Thursday. Memorials may be made in the form of masses or to the Building Fund at St. John's Church.
