Bernadene (Bernie) Wilma Garrett, former Hartford City resident, went to be with the Lord on August 27, 2022 at Heritage Pointe in Warren, Indiana.
Bernie was born on September 14, 1924 in Jordan Township, Autrim County Michigan, the daughter of Garl and Cora Coon Brown. She went to East Jordan High School and later graduated from Lansing Business University. Bernie worked for the State of Michigan Conservation Department before moving to Indiana.
Bernie married Dwight Garrett on April 2, 1950. She worked with her husband for 40 years in his dental practice. Bernie was an active member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Hartford City, holding many offices in the church. She taught Sunday classes to boys and girls for thirty-six years.
Survivors include her son, Roger (Irene) Garrett, daughter in law, Penny Garrett; grandchildren: Troy (Stacey) Garrett, Tara (Matt) Reust, Mallory (Kevin) Koch; step grandchildren: Michael Milozewski, Samuel Griffin, Christine Griffin Everitt; great grandchildren: Delaney Garrett, Aubrey Garrett, MacKenzie Koch, Cora Reust, Ethan Reust; step great grandchildren: Carly, James, Michael, Jr., Caedence, Ellie, Adalynn, Emerly and several nieces and nephews.
Bernie was preceded in death by her husband Dwight, a daughter Janet Garrett Havely, a son Jim Garrett, a grandson Matthew Havely, her parents, her sister Marjorie Knox and her brother Bob Brown.
A service to celebrate Bernie's life will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, September 3 at Waters Funeral Home, 501 West Washington Street, Hartford City, Indiana with Ginny Soultz officiating. Entombment will follow at Gardens of Memory, Muncie. Friends may call at the funeral home, Saturday morning from 10 – 11 a.m.
The family requests no flowers please. In honor of the good missionary works that Bernie and Dwight did, we are requesting memorials be made to the following: Habitat for Humanity – Grant County, 215 S. Adams St. Ste. B, Marion, IN 46952.
